Recycling and Surviving in Beasts of the Southern Wild: Screening Katrina as a Magic Realist Tale M IRIAM S TRUBE P ROLOGUE : T HE M AN ON THE D UMP The movie Beasts of the Southern Wild (2012) is placed in an incongruous setting: on a dump amidst nature. This placement connects it to the modernist project of showing decay, disillusionment, a wasteland. Even more, as I want to show, it can be connected to a very complex – and somewhat ambivalent – approach to trash, junk, the dump. I therefore would like to list a number of magical realist features that are at play in Beasts of the Southern Wild: 1) It is told in a matter-of-fact tone often from the perspective of an unusual focalizer, such as a child.

The soundtrack first concentrates on natural sounds, introducing the protagonists’ life in close proximity to nature.
