Recycling and Surviving in Beasts of the Southern Wild: Screening Katrina as a Magic Realist Tale M IRIAM S TRUBE P ROLOGUE : T HE M AN ON THE D UMP The movie Beasts of the Southern Wild (2012) is placed in an incongruous setting: on a dump amidst nature. This placement connects it to the modernist project of showing decay, disillusionment, a wasteland. Even more, as I want to show, it can be connected to a very complex – and somewhat ambivalent – approach to trash, junk, the dump. The poem “The Man on the Dump” (1942) by modernist writer Wallace Stevens provides a helpful reference to open and motivate my argument, allowing me to introduce the intricate structure of the film as well as to incorporate a layer of criticism.
